Since COVID-19 was declared global pandemic and all citizens obliged to self-isolation, every aspect of life has been subjected to change – including the smallest things, like our beauty routine. It’s no news that stress can affect the skin, aggravating conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, or increase inflammation that commonly results in breakouts. Hence, it is essential to use the right products when it comes to skincare – especially now that we are being exposed to less sun light. On this note, we asked Beauty Editor and MUA Marika Zaramella (@LeItalienne on Instagram) to talk us through her daily routine and favourite products during the lockdown.
1. Tell us about your beauty routine and how did it change since lockdown started.
My beauty routine really changes according to my skin’s needs and change of seasons. At the moment, I’ve stopped using Retinol until September and replaced AHA and BHA exfoliants with PHAs. Polyhydroxy acids are a lot gentler on the skin due to their larger molecule size. I always make sure to hydrate my face with a delicate moisturising cream day and night, as well as exfoliate three times per week. I never leave the house without a Vitamin C serum followed by a good SPF cream! I’ve also been trying different face masks and new treatments using tools like skin scrubbers.
2. Is there a product you are using the most or happened to buy for the first time during quarantine?
I can’t live without chemical exfoliants. I was using Pixi Glow Tonic, which I love as it’s enriched with 5% Glycolic Acid. However, now that summer is coming and we are being blessed with beautiful sunny days, I swapped it for NeoStrata Bionic Cream – a more delicate product based on Polyhydroxy Acids that doesn’t increase sun sensitivity, all while keeping your skin extremely hydrated. I rigorously use it at night and it’s suitable for both the face and the body.
Exfoliants play a fundamental part in my daily routine as they keep my skin clean and healthy, reducing breakouts and clogged pores. When I don’t use it, I see the difference. My skin gets dull and full of impurities.
3. Have you tried any new skincare brands recently?
Neostrata and Dermalogica have been on my top list for quite a long time! They are both dermatologically tested, and I must say, you can really see the difference from the other skincare brands.
Another one I tried is a sustainable brand BYBI Beauty. I really appreciate their work ethics and the way they strive to do better for our planet. From packaging to formulas, most of their ingredients derive from recycled substances from the edible industry.
I also love Plenaire. Their Skin Frosting Deeply Hydrating Mask is just perfect for my sensitive skin! Last but not least, Cle Cosmetics Vitamin C Elixir has been a true revelation.
4. How is your relationship with makeup now? Which top 3 products do you use for your everyday look/meetings on zoom?
My approach to makeup is quite controversial at the moment. I am working on self-acceptance, and it’s been two months since I’ve said goodbye to foundation. I still use it for tutorials or work – just to compliment my complexion rather than cover my imperfections. Spots and breakouts exist, and I am tired of having to hide them, I just put my mind at rest!
If I have to pick three products I can’t do without, they would probably be Benefit 24-HR Brow Setter, Espressoh Mascara and Glassy Blush.
5. From beauty editors to celebrities, we are all trying to fight quarantine dullness in our own creative way. Is there any makeup trend you’ve noticed taking over / you’re fascinated by?
Colour pop eyeliners, pastel eyeshadows and anything that is inspired by spring’s colour palette, really. The one that caught my attention is the ‘Foxy Eye’ trend which is inspired by Bella Hadid’s lifted makeup look. However, it’s not something that I would recreate on myself.
6. Your post-quarantine first makeup look?
Just bare face – that is going to be it. No makeup, no regrets. I can’t wait to stroll around Milan and look comfortable in my own – imperfect – skin. The second look is going to be super glossy, wearing Espressoh Glassy Blush from head to toe.
