The Tokyo Lights

Not one to underestimate, Tokyo remains a leader in style for challenging the norm and setting precedents in unconventional creativity. However, this season less radical collections were met with utilitarian pragmatism and collage-like, juxtaposed silhouettes.

HYKE’s Hideaki Yoshihara and Yukiko Ode presented contrasting textures and sharp tailoring in their utility-driven collection proving to be a Tokyo Fashion Week highlight. Frills and pleats were found against cable-knit dresses and re-interpreted MA1 bolero jackets, only further complimented by accessorised Julius Tart Optical eyewear frames.

Luxe streetwear label MISTERGENTLEMAN led by designers Takeshi Osumi and Yuichi Yoshii, brought a sophisticated dandy elegance to the modern man’s comfort-driven wardrobe in compelling looks – from their python print suits paired with loose silk shirts and kerchiefs to surprisingly balanced cropped puffers, parkas, and trench coats.

Stand-out newcomers included ANEI whose layered looks offered a sophisticated palette, and DressedUndressed’s minimalistic reconstructions, alongside streetwise Children of the Discordance and the revived JieDa

Some collaborative collections were found to be complimentary (Hyke x The North Face, Mr Gentleman x Fragment), whilst some others missed the mark (Koché x Pokemon). Only time (and sales) will tell for a successful season, but one thing is for sure, originality always prevails.
